Well Milo had his first check up today. All checked out GREAT. He has another appointment on the 25 of this month and they will decide then on the date of the removal of his halo.
Milo was a little irritable this morning. Ok, a lot irritable. He was almost impossible in the waiting room and when we got into the exam room he refused to talk to the doctors. He was cooperative, but very silent. As soon as we left the exam room he perked up. He got down right happy as we drove to Gayle’s restaurant and he was laughing and playing the whole time we were at Gayle’s. It finally occurred to me. He was probably feeling a bit of anxiety about being back at the same hospital he just got to leave. It was probably unknown to him as to why he was there and that probably made for some unsettling nerves.
Scott and I were so glad that he wanted to go to Gayle’s restaurant. She made him an egg salad sandwich and he ate 2 halves! That’s more food than he’s eaten in 2 days! Plus he drank a whole juice that she gave him. He was happy and smiling and I just really appreciate good friends (well, Gayle is family!). Thanks Gayle for brightening my boy’s day! You are awesome!
Speaking of awesome people in Milo’s life, lets talk about Toby. What a great friend he is. He came over yesterday (Wednesday February 3) and brought Milo a Jamba Juice (since Milo is a little sensitive to super cold things right now, he saved it and had it this morning with his breakfast). They played SUPER for about 40 minutes. Then Milo got a little tired. He just wanted to rest. So Toby played for a little bit in the play room and then he jumped up and asked Milo if he wanted to play again. Milo said no and with that Toby launched into this super silly routine that made Milo belly laugh! The first laugh I’ve heard from him in 2 weeks. It was awesome and seriously melted my heart. After 20 minutes of that Milo was ready and those two boys played in the play room for over an hour. And the whole time Toby was just the bestest friend anyone could hope for. I was just impressed with Toby’s persistence, even when Milo claimed that he was tired. Most 7 year old boys would have given up but not Toby. He kept right on playing with Milo. Thanks Toby for being so great! We sure do love you and appreciate you!
Since Milo was DONE with his liquid diet after the 1st day, he has been begging me to make him regular food. So I have been modifying most dinners to super cooked and easily smashable on the roof of the mouth with the tongue. All was going well till day 3 when Milo’s tongue was so sore from smashing up against the screws that are on the roof of his mouth that he cried whenever he tried to eat. So the doctor gave him a prescription for Lidocaine oral solution. So this evening when Milo was getting ready to have dinner we tried it. Super funny! He was so numb in the mouth he couldn’t even swallow! Poor kid, can’t win for trying. I think next time we’ll use a little less and see what comes of that!
Milo is doing well. We have our ups and downs but for the most part he is doing well and getting better each day. I think we will all be much happier when he gets the halo off, but for now we are just enjoying the adventure and trying to find the humor in it all.
Yay, an update! We’ve been wondering how Milo has been doing these first few days at home. Great to know that he’s able to eat solid foods (for the most part!) And great to know he has awesome friends to keep him on his toes– go Toby!
Well, I waited a couple of days after I made a comment that ended up somewhere in e-space. I misspelled the security word! So Milo, I will try again. You are a very, very important person in my life. While you were going through your surgery, I was still trying to recover from my broken leg, leg infections and antibiotic side effects. I also had to withdraw from pain meds just like you. For some reason whenever I began to feel sorry for myself, I would think of the things that you were going through, and I would begin to pray for your safety and quick recovery. When you had a setback, I wanted to tell you that I could feel everything you were feeling, and that I would have taken it all away if I could have. But I couldn’t even talk to you. Nephi was a real super hero from the Book of Mormon. Sara found him and asked if we could get him for you. He did everything his father asked of him. He trusted God. He said (1Nephi:3) “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them. And that is how I see you, Milo Man not afraid to do what God wants you to do. Grandma Ackerman loes you so!
The last sentence should be Grandma Ackerman: “LOVES” you so!
Hooray for Milo and his terrific family! We did the mushy diet after TJ’s accident in the summer. Lots of mashed potatoes, applesauce, and cheating on TJ’s part. Good luck and God bless you all. Love you all so much!
Hi Milo!
I just found out that you had a website!
I am glad you are eating well and getting better everyday. I will keep you in my prayers and if you need anything, please let me know~
So classic of you guys to be able to “find the humor it all”! You guys are SO awesome! I am so glad Milo is getting back to his old self! Yay, Toby for being the best and helping Milo be happy!
Milo, I think you have the best sense of humor ever! You keep us rolling! Sara’s reports of church are just NOT the same without you!
Love, Molly
P.S. What an awesome doctor you have to check on you in the early am! 🙂
Poor Milo! Sounds like he has a great friend though. Be sure to tell me Milo’s reaction to seeing himself as a superhero!
Hang in there Thompsons. Glad to hear that Milo and Toby enjoyed each other’s company. Love from Grace
