[Milo’s “mustache”. Crazy Kid!]
Niah has had some big accomplishments this month. She can ride a bike with no training wheels. Now you have to understand the immensity of this. Toby and Logan came over on Thursday April 23. They all go outside to ride bikes while I work on laundry and talk to Roberta inside. The next thing I know Niah and Emilie come inside and declare that they want to ride their bikes with no training wheels. Roberta and I look at each other and give them the ‘When daddy comes home he’ll take off the training wheels and run up and down the street with you’ shpeel. That wasn’t good enough for them. They wanted to learn NOW. So I told Niah as soon as I was done with the laundry I’d come out there. About 30 minutes later with running shoes on and a smile on my face, I take off Niah’s training wheels. Roberta does the same. Niah runs back in the house for something and Roberta starts Emilie. She steadies her and starts to run, lets go and Emilie is off without any more help from Roberta. That was it. Her first time with no training wheels and boom, she is an expert. Niah runs out, sees Emilie and says she’s ready. I hold onto her seat get her going let go and……she rides off like a pro. By the end of the hour both girls can start themselves, turn around and are owning the road. It was amazing.
[Emilie and Niah….the next generation of bike riders!]
The next morning Niah gets up, gets dressed and starts to head out the door. ‘Uh, Niah, where are you going?’ ‘Outside to ride my bike.’ I reel her back in and inform her she must eat breakfast before she can head outside. By the end of day two those two girls were going off the curb, riding down driveways and riding without any feet! I have NEVER seen a kid pick up on bike riding like those two girls did. Guess the timing was right and the positive peer pressure was there. I have a couple of videos of it, but I can’t post them. That is a whole new story in and of itself. If I can get the videos up I will, otherwise you’ll just have to use your imagination.
Keri has now entered the world of mobility. She was getting really good at the bum scoot and pivoting by using her feet. Very funny move if you’ve never seen a kid do it. But I finally realized that at 10 months she should be able to do more than lay on her belly and do the super man. So we went into action. Keri was only allowed to be put on her tummy and NO ONE was allowed to pick her up or give her toys unless I told them too. The first day was ROUGH! Keri cried a lot. The second day we had our neighbors Ian and Andrea over for dinner. They have one son who is about 6 weeks older than Keri. While they were here she did some moves that looked more like swimming than crawling. But she was in a forward motion, small as the motion might be. By Monday afternoon of April 20 Keri was doing the worm. Can’t describe it any other way. She puts her bum up and moves forward. Watch a worm crawl, that is exactly what it looks like. No army crawl, no knee crawling, just the worm. She is fast and can get anywhere she wants. It’s cute. For the first week I could put her on her bum and she still stayed pretty stationary. But now no matter what position she starts out in, she gets herself on her tummy and starts the worm. A whole new world has opened up for her and our family. She has already gone head first out the back door. The kids are better now about keeping the doors closed. Her clothes are FILTHY constantly. I swear she does more of the mopping now than anyone else! We have to be more careful about what we leave on the floor too. She’ll put anything in her mouth. So, as we approach her 11 month birthday, at least we can say she is mobile. She is a much happier little girl I must say. She also got another tooth. Now she has 4 bottom and 2 top.
On Thursday April 23 Alix and Milo went with Scott to work. It was Take Your Child To Work Day. They had a blast. Google does know how to put on a good party. Alix and Milo were in heaven the whole day. Why only those two? They were the only two that fit into the same age category and so it made the most sense since Scott had to be with them all the time.
They made kites, watched some science guy, ate, did a scavenger hunt, ate more, played some team games, ate more, went to Scott’s office and ate more! They came back full and happy. What a lucky day for any kid.
