CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Did somebody say snow?

on February 13, 2009

Tuesday February 3, Mandi’s kids had to go to school. Since all my kids were up by 5:30 am we didn’t have to worry about her kids waking up mine!! We spent the morning getting the kids ready to go outside and enjoy the “snow”. Apparently by this time it had been warm for too long. The “snow” had turned into more like ice. Since I don’t know this kind of stuff, I got the kids all dressed in their snow clothes and we headed out. Anyone ever try and make a snow man with ice? It wasn’t easy. Put 1 adult and 5 kids in the “snow” who have never been in the snow before (except for when I was at BYU but that doesn’t count. I didn’t make any snowmen or snowballs back then) and then have them try and build a snowman. I’m sure Mandi’s neighbors were just rolling on the ground with laughter at how ridiculous we must have looked. But we had a great time and we finally got our “snowman” and named him Stumpy.

The kids’ favorite thing to do was eat the snow. Their second favorite thing to do was put the snow down their snow pants (seems ironic doesn’t it?).

After about a half hour Mandi had to leave for a doctor’s appointment and about 30 minutes after that the kids were all done being in the snow and we went inside. We got all warmed up and had quesadilla’s for lunch. Mandi’s boys came home shortly after that and we headed to Mandi’s parents house. I do love to visit with Mandi’s mom Sharon. What a delight she is. We had some wonderful conversation and I got to see Doug and his wife, that was awesome. The kids all played in Sharon’s “playground” in the backyard. The next thing I know, my kids come in barefoot and jacket less. I tried to remind them that it was COLD outside and that there was SNOW on the ground. They informed they were hot and their shoes were muddy and ran back outside. What was I to do? They were having a blast and Mandi’s kids were dressed the same way……. At some point Niah came in and fell asleep on one of the couches. She must have been tired because I’m sure she has NEVER done that in her life! About 4 Mandi had another appointment to go to and so we all stayed at the house. We finally got back to Mandi’s about 6pm. We made dinner and had kids in bed by 8. Mandi and I then made another trip to her mom’s so I could sew up some pants for Jaime (actually, Sharon did it. THANKS Sharon!!) and Mandi needed to do her taxes. We left there after 10pm but it was so fun. Mandi and stayed up even later after we got back to her house. I think 1 am again. It was another rough night, but no locked doors, good thing!! :0)

Wednesday February 4 went much the same in the morning. We all showered and Mandi straightened Jaime’s hair and my hair. I LOVE it when my hair is straightened. The kids wanted to play in the snow again, except I didn’t put ALL the snow stuff on. They just put on boots and jackets. EASY!!

They played in the snow while I loaded up the van. We were going to have to say goodbye at the end of the day but we spent as much fun time as we could. I had almost everything packed and ready to go by the time Mandi went to get her boys. About 2:45 we left Mandi’s house and headed down to Murray to visit our friend Kari. We arrived at her house a little before 4. With my six, Mandi’s 4 and Kari’s 3 we had 13 kids in that perfect sized house.

The kids played outside for a while and then when it got too cold they headed inside. They were having so much fun that it didn’t seem crowded at all. Well, until they sat to eat some dinner. Then we seemed to be swimming in kids. But it was still fun. We had mac and cheese and broccoli for dinner. Then brownies for dessert. All the kids had so much fun but Kari, Mandi and I had tons of fun too.

I hadn’t seen Kari since Alix was a little baby. It was fun to see her again and catch up and just be in awe of her awesomeness. She is just as happy and beautiful as she was in high school and I am glad that we have somehow kept in touch all these years. We had fun doing a photo session and talking about old times. But soon it was getting late and I was due at Cathy’s house and so we said our goodbye’s and left.

I’m sure Kari’s house has never felt so big or empty…. :0) After saying goodbye to Mandi and her boys, we loaded in the car and headed for Layton. We arrived about 8pm to a houseful of open arms and warm smiles. It was so good to see Cathy and all her kids. They just welcomed us and they were so excited to see the kids. They were so kind and loving and the kids enjoyed it very much. After talking with Tory for a while about her wedding and her soon to be husband, we blew up some mattresses and got kids settled and asleep. Then Cathy and I , determined to get a good nights rest, talked till 2am! Not a good start to our good nights rest! But it was fun and needed and just wonderful. Thanks Cathy for letting me keep you up so late!!
