CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

March 2016

on May 11, 2016

March was a busy month. It went by so fast I forgot to do a blog post about it! :o/

The month started off with Scott’s birthday. I made pulled pork sandwiches and his favorite chocolate cake from the family cook book we got for Christmas. He seemed to enjoy both of them!

The day of his birthday was the day we were scheduled to clean the church. So while he was at work the kids and I went down and cleaned it as a birthday present for him. He was pretty happy about not having to clean on his birthday.

Alix had her first swim meet on March 5. It was all the teams together. Score wasn’t kept but it helped the kids see how a meet is run. She had fun but came home VERY sick. She spent pretty much the rest of March sick, sick, sick! It took 3 antibiotics, ear drops and LOTS of rest and fluids before she was able to feel human again. Poor thing. But she managed to stay on top of her school work and swim team obligations.

Alix's first meet was in the rain. I volunteered to be a timer, that meant I got to sit under the canopy! :o)

Speaking of swimming. Being the co-president for our summer swim team has proven to be way more work and effort than I ever thought possible for a summer swim league!! March was an interesting month of meetings, emails, texts and decision making so that the team could be formed and started the first week of April. No small task I assure you. A HUGE learning lesson for me. However, knowing I’m making a difference that benefits not only my family but the community is rewarding.

Jaime, Alix and Milo participated in a youth choir that performed in Oakland and San Francisco. They did a musical performance of Christ’s last days on earth. They performed over Easter weekend in Oakland at the temple and again two weekends later at a Catholic Cathedral in San Francisco. It was amazing. I was so pleased with my kids and their dedication to practices and performances. The whole choir sounded great and the soloists did a great job depicting their characters.

Milo had a face grafting surgery. It was a very simple surgery compared to what he usually has to go through. His plastic surgeon, Dr. Toth, thought Milo needed more growth in the forehead, temples, cheeks and nose. So he did a fat graft. Milo does look a bit different but still the same Milo. This surgery was only about 3 hours long. Hospital stay about 24 hours. Milo had 10 3-stitch incisions on his face. You can’t even tell now. The scars are very minimal. However, ever since the surgery, Milo has broken out in acne. Not sure if the two are correlated or not, but he’s definitely hit the acne stage of life.

We had our friends the Bremmers come for a short visit the day before Milo’s surgery and they stayed through the weekend. They came to California for a funeral. The circumstances for the visit weren’t stellar, but the visit was awesome. They saved our bacon more than once that weekend and we are super grateful for them!

All the girls. It was so cute. Where are the boys??

It was awesome that they were here for Milo’s 13th birthday. 3 teenagers!! Ack! It was a great party and Milo was very blessed this year.

Jaime had her first accident. She was in the right turn lane waiting for the car in front of her to go. That car was waiting for a pedestrian. However, the car behind Jaime decided he didn’t want to wait… In a 1972 VW Bug, being rear ended also means you take out the engine. :o( Jaime was pretty sad. Not only for the loss of the car, but it was pretty disturbing to be hit unexpectedly from behind. It was a pretty good hit. Her glasses flew off and her neck is still sore. I will spare all of posterity the hassle we have had with insurance but it has been an adventure for sure!! Thank goodness we still have 3 vehicles. With all the different directions we all go these days we need 3 vehicles!!

Speaking of the bug. Funny story… Early in the month we get a call from Jaime that says she broke down on the way to seminary. Some ward members saw them and helped them push the car safely off the road and gave them a ride to seminary. Scott and I take Jaime another car and go to the bug to figure out what is wrong. Of course it starts raining so Scott decides we should just tow the bug home. So we take a chain and hook it to the front of the bug and back of the van. We proceed to drive home at about 20 miles an hour. It was seriously the funniest thing ever. We had to drive some of the more major roads since they are the fastest route home. Scott and I were laughing so hard after got home about how ridiculous it all was. Actually later in the week when Scott finally had a chance to look it over without the rain, he realized it was a super simple thing and it took him about 5 minutes to fix it.

Speaking of Milo’s surgery. Funny story… Jaime’s accident happened the day of Milo’s surgery. So getting Milo and I home from the hospital on Friday was proving to be a bit challenging. So Milo and I took BART home. No biggie except we enter BART with Milo looking like he’s been beat up because of the swelling & bruising and we have all our hospital stuff which includes pillows, clothes etc. While we were waiting on the platform a very tall, very built black man motions to me. He was behind Milo.
He says ‘You need help?’.
I said ‘No I’m fine.’
He says ‘No really, I can help you. You need anything?’ He motions at Milo. Oh I get it now…
I said ‘No really we are fine. He just had surgery.’
He says ok and gets on the BART train, a different one than we were getting on. It was super funny though. Actually quite nice to think some random stranger would be willing to mow down some jerk who just beat up my son. :o)

Milo went on a 3 day/2 night 20 mile backpacking trip. He had a great time. He was one of the hike cooks which was awesome. He was able to finish off his cooking merit badge. Whoot!!

Only picture of Milo on the trip. He really did have fun!

Afton and Alix went to Utah and spent 9 days with grandma and grandpa Thompson. They had a fabulous time!

We enjoyed general conference at the Butt’s house. They were out of town and so we watched it at their house. It worked out so well. The way their house is set up we could spread out and still see and hear all of conference. It was super nice. Keri even fell asleep for the entire last session. I wouldn’t normally be happy about that but she gets so tired and refuses to sleep. It was nice to have her peacefully snoozing during the last session and wake up happy.

Scott was awesome in March and fixed the Truck. Instead of wasting money having it fixed by a mechanic he jumped right in with both hands. After 5 weeks, lots of trips to the auto part store, lots of “help” from the kids, the wife, the internet and a few choice words, the truck is as good as new! Go Scott! We love our handy man!

Easter is pretty low key around here. We went to the Lamb Of God performance that the kids were in on Easter Sunday. The Monday after the kids found their Easter goodies that the bunny left for them and then we colored eggs. All in all a successful weekend. Loved it.

Coloring eggs is so scientific around here.

Scott took the 4 weeks between being released from the bishopric and being called as the Young Men’s President to grow a beard. It looked pretty good but felt awful!! I don’t think he’ll grow another one for a while. I think my kisses were too hard to do without!!!

Not too far from our house is this farm. It’s free and in the middle of it is a grassy field with a big play structure park. We went with the Hua’s. Lincoln is our little 7th child Monday – Friday. It was fun to go on a field trip with them.
