Yep, that’s her name. Not the one I would pick, but she came with it.
I’ll just say right off that having a dog was not in my five year plan. I figured some day we’d have a big backyard and get a cute little puppy that would grow into a big family guard dog, but that was years down the line.
So when Erika approached me for the second year in a row about taking her cute little dog off her hands I pondered on it. That was my first mistake! :o)
Ok, done with the pessimism. We have a dog. Erika’s family has had Gertie for 3 years. She is a wired haired Dachshund. She is a very well behaved dog. A highly trained dog. I have no complaints about her except that I never saw myself owning a dog that looks and acts more like a cat. But isn’t a cat, it’s a dog. Dogs are big burly animals that can protect you if needed. Gertie just wants everyone to scratch her belly (which I won’t do!!).
The kids LOVE her and do all the care. I don’t have to do anything. Yay! Scott has been thoroughly enjoying her too. He loves to take her on walks and play fetch with her during his few minutes of free time each day. It’s been good exercise for the Thompson kids. It’s “so fun” to walk Gertie. I guess they don’t understand that to me, Gertie is walking them!
So we have a perfectly trained animal that everyone loves and is happy to have. It’s been a wonderful two months for the family and Gertie. We have even found a few people who love dogs enough that they have volunteered to dog sit if we go out of town. Yay for us! She came fully equipped and we haven’t had to spend a dime on her yet. How could getting a pet be any more perfect?? Now if we could just teach Keri that grabbing Gertie by the neck is NOT a good idea….
WOW! That is big news. I should check your blog more often! Congratulations!!!
