CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

CSDC

on August 19, 2012

Those 4 letters will be forever engrained in my person!! They stand for Cub Scout Day Camp. I LOVED running Cub Scout Day Camp this year. It was my first year but it was a blast!!

The 2 weeks leading up to it, and especially the week leading up to it, was nuts. At times I wondered if I had gone crazy and at other times it was pure bliss. All I know is that it’s right up my alley!

My job this year was: arrange all the boys into day camp dens, make sure there was a parent volunteer each day for each den, make all the charts, lists and other organizational paperwork and be the scapegoat.

All in all the day camp turned out very well. I got a lot of compliments and was asked why I was still smiling on the last day. I guess people appreciated my positive attitude. I had decided early on that if I was to be the scapegoat then I was going to do it with a smile. It worked!

Can’t wait for next year. I have plans to make the process go smoother and easier.

Milo’s day camp uniform. The theme was western.

In other news, Milo had a GREAT time. He enjoyed spending a week with ALL boys doing boy things!! He doesn’t quite get enough of that here….

Milo’s Cub Scout Day Camp Den. Back: Toby, Milo Front: Joshua, Jacob, Mark, Jason and Trevor. Peter was gone this day. It was a fun den! They were chosen to do the first flag ceremony because their den had shown the most maturity during the Monday practices and were the best behaved Bear Den.

Jaime went everyday and was my right hand man. She helped unload and load the trailers. She put out the den baskets and flags each morning. She took roll. Helped pass out chocolates for the volunteers. She was just the go getter. She ran little errands here and there for whoever needed it. She was a life saver.

Milo is on the one on the very end with the black pants on. They were throwing balls at bottles. Super fun!

Alix was my life saver too. She stayed home and babysat siblings for me. They had a GREAT time each day. I tried to only leave her with one or two. The others I’d take with me and they would attend siblings camp.

On Friday each den did a skit. Milo was the main character of his den’s skit. Milo was a fortune teller and could tell you your fortune by looking in your shoe. When Milo looked in Toby’s shoe he predicted that Toby would go on a long journey and then chucked his shoe as far as he could. It was pretty funny and Milo did a good job using a loud and clear voice. It was GREAT.

I really appreciated Scott for teaching me how to make all those charts and fliers and the certificate we gave out at the end of the week. He was super supportive and that made the first half of July so much easier.

Half of the volunteers at CSDC are boy scout troops and venture crews. They were helping with the program for the last day. One of the things they did was sing songs. This one is “Home, Home on the Range”. Very nicely done. They had so much energy and got the cub scouts involved. Great bunch of kids!

Side note: I get that I am not a teenager any more. I’ve even come to grips with the fact that I’m out of my 20’s. I’m still working up to “mid 30’s” but not quite there. Anyway, through all that I’ve done in my life, I’ve never felt old. When I think of myself and look at myself in the mirror I don’t think I feel or look much older than I did 20 years ago.

But that all changed at CSDC. Things in my life that should have made me feel old but have not: 6 kids, buying my own cars, renting a home, having a will, having a teenager etc. But nope, none of those compared to this:

The last day of CSDC I had a teenage girl, a Junior in high school and a helper in the siblings camp, come up to me and said ‘Could you sign my volunteer sheet right here under supervisor?’

AHHHH, I’m old enough to sign a high school student’s volunteer form as a supervisor. I don’t know what about that situation that made me realize my real age, but hang it all, I haven’t been the same since! Oh well, at least I’m not 40…yet!!
