CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Girls Camp

on July 27, 2012

I’ve heard enough stories about the drama at girls camp. Heck, I’ve lived through the drama that can occur at girls camp! So I was a little nervous about going, but I was also VERY excited too. A change of pace, no cooking, minimal cleaning, planned activities each day AND a hike. I LOVE to hike. How bad could it really be??

I had a FABULOUS time at camp. I learned a few things:

Jaime and her friend on the bus. We go to a camp that's about 3 hours away, so they load all the girls up on a bus. I rode in a car.

Jaime's goofy nest of girls. She had such a good time!

-Drama does not have to exist at camp. 6 girls can spend a week together and not have one ounce of drama!

Jaime's nest name was MULAN. It stood for Maidens United Living Alongside Nature.

If it was your turn for kitchen duty, you got to decorate the menu board. My nest called themselves, The Sisters Of Nephi. The theme this year was "The Hero Within".

-Attitude. The saying ‘Attitude is everything’ applies perfectly to girls camp. Not just for the girls but for the leaders too. When we create no drama or feed the pending drama, then there isn’t any.

Jaime's skit with her nest. The girl in the middle is trying to decide if she should go to girls camp. Jaime's side is trying to convince her not to go (the bad girls). Cute skit!!

My girls did a skit where the Sisters of Nephi actually had a MAJOR roll in building the ship that took Lehi and his family to America. One of my girls wrote the whole skit by herself. It turned out so good!!

-Good parenting skills. I learned that staying emotionally out of situations makes it easier to see the bigger picture. Unfortunately I haven’t figured out how to do that in parenting. How do you not feed the emotion but still let the kids know you love them?? When you are with kids for a week, it’s different. Being with kids for a lifetime makes things a little harder….

Gorgeous scenery!

MMMMM, marshmellows.

-Taking a challenge meant for 12 year old girls who wouldn’t take the challenge, makes you into a super cool counselor. When the other level one counselor challenged the girls to be the first one to soak themselves in the ice cold pool/pond/river (whatever it was) that we stopped at on our hike, I couldn’t resist the challenge and did it. Of course the girls followed suite and we had a GREAT time playing and going numb till it was time to continue on back to camp.

All the first levels who got soaked in the icy cold water with me.

A beautiful place where we hiked. See the waterfall in the background. Small, but beautiful.

-Zip lines are fun. Doing it superman style, even better!! Finding out later you were suppose to be hooked to 2 ropes not one…

Not a super good picture but you get the idea. I did straighten out. I had just jumped. SO FUN!!

Jaime gett'n ready for her turn

The traditional way to ride the zip line

-Taking my morning jog in higher altitude was actually quite refreshing. I enjoyed every minute of my alone time each morning.

Jaime on her hike

While on her hike, Jaime's group came across a massive amount of butterflies that were super friendly.

-Freezing at night, no fun. Having no pillow, no fun. Having your pillow brought to you and then using your extra blanket as a blanket not pillow, bliss!!

I dunno why, I just like this picture....

Ok, coolest rocking horse EVER!!

-Having your daughter there and she actually seeks you out to see how you are, melts the heart.

My beautiful daughter playing a "bad girl". LOVE the hair!!

My JC taking an afternoon nap. My sleeping bag is the black one next to her and the red one. Sleeping on solid wood for a week sure does make you grateful for your 14 year old mattress at home.....

-Having your nest of girls think that said daughter is super awesome, even better!

For a humanitary project, the girls made hats on looms. My girls really enjoyed doing that and would often sit together chatting and looming away.

My "house" for a week.

My girls, certification leader and all of us ready to go home!

Both Jaime and I had a wonderful time at camp. I’d be more than happy to return next year if asked!!

Coolest thing EVER. Have you ever been part of a flag burning ceremony?? Changes your perspective and aditude towards the American Flag. I was awed by the reverance associated with the ceremony and how much more respect I have for the flag. NEAT!

Scott did quite well here at home too. I had arranged places for the kids to go each day and made sure there was plenty of food for him to make that was easy to prepare. He reports having had a good week and even said it was fun at times. When a group of moms were sitting around the table one afternoon at camp they were all laughing about how their kids were begging them not to go. I just had to laugh. My kids couldn’t wait to get rid of me!! I’m glad they love Scott so much and that he’s such a good daddy. It also felt good for them to say they missed me and were glad I was back.
