CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Jaime

on July 5, 2012

Jaime is the “typical” oldest child. Super smart, talented, responsible… I love and respect first children. They are the guinea pig of the family and have to endure it so well. Jaime endures our mistakes as parents so well! She is easy to forgive as well.

Jaime has been a busy girl. She had a HUGE fundraiser at the beginning of the year where she sold homemade pizza’s in order to earn enough money to go to girls camp. She sold the most pizza’s of all. She sold 42. Then she spent an entire Saturday with the young women making them. She is the pizza machine.

Not as cute as Jaime, but I can't help but try!!

Jaime also endured her first YW presidency change. She said she felt like crying. But it’s been enough time now and LOVES the new presidency!

Jaime is the babysitting queen. She has the phone ringing off the hook with requests to babysit. She has to turn people down all the time because she already has another job for the same day/time. She is earning enough to build her savings pretty fast and pay for all her own wants. VERY NICE.

Jaime really wanted to dance this year. She knew we would not be able to pay for it this time since Scott is going to school. But she REALLY wanted to do it. So she paid for it by herself. I was super impressed. Then when dance recital time came around she paid for her friends’ tickets too. She is so good with her money and happily pays for the things that are her wants. I am so grateful for that!!

Her very goofy but fun dance class.

I let Jaime wear a little bit of eye make-up this year, she felt like a queen!

In May of this year, Jaime’s long time dance teacher passed away. All my girls LOVED Mrs. Gentry. We were sad to hear the news. But her funeral was so nice. It was a tribute to her life. Her eldest granddaughter even gave a mini dance lesson. It was so neat to see all the girls who knew what she was doing kinda move along with her. It was a wonderful way to celebrate this woman’s life. Mrs. Gentry taught dance for the city for 40+ years. She LOVED it and we all love her. Some of the best things to come from the funeral were quotes. Jaime loves to walk around quoting some of them:

“A star danced and under that was I born.”
“Dancers keep time, everyone else wastes it.”
“If you aren’t dancing, you are wasting your feet.”

Because of the passing of Mrs. Gentry and a new teacher taking her place this year, I was a little unsure on how the dance recital would go. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the dancing this year. Jaime’s dance teacher is spectacular, but the other teachers and their dances were….less than stellar. But Jaime’s class did well and got the most applause. They really were the best. She danced in 2 numbers in 3 different recitals happening over 2 days. It was a long two days, but Jaime loved it and it was a fun time as always. If you’d like to see the videos of her dance, email me.

Jaime's new dance teacher, Ms. Jessica

Not sure if the girls were doing this on purpose. Jaime did it on purpose though. But it makes for a fun chain of pictures!

Jaime has learned a few things these past few months….

First, mom wasn’t kidding when she said to wear sunblock at the beach. Jaime got her first invite to the beach alone. I told her she could go on two conditions, a)she put on sunblock and b)she drank LOTS of water. She did neither and reaped the consequences of those actions for 10 days. Poor thing. I really did feel bad for her. She couldn’t sleep. She blistered and those blisters popped and oozed. She couldn’t wear clothes that touched the burn and she was miserable! But she has learned her lesson. She bought her own bottle of sunblock and carries it everywhere.

I learned later that you shouldn't put ice on a burn. It's bad for the skin. Cool washclothes are better.

Second, maybe she shouldn’t be so free to tell everyone how much money she has. Her and a friend went shopping together and she was pretty free to tell the girl how much money she had. Unfortunately this cute friend took advantage of Jaime’s honesty and generosity and Jaime ended up buying her a pair of shoes. When we dropped her at home the first thing her dad said was ‘Does that make 50 now?’ and she replied ‘No, more!’. Glad Jaime learned that one now and I hope she never forgets it. Being kind and generous is one thing, getting taken advantage of is another.

Third, how to be resourceful. She was babysitting the other day and the kids wanted to make a cake. So she got out the cake mix and realized they had no eggs. So she went to a neighbor’s house and borrowed some. After the cake was done she realized they had no frosting. No biggie she could make some. But then she realized they had no powdered sugar. So she went online, learned how to make powdered sugar and then made the frosting. She said it came out delicious. I was SUPER impressed. She did not give up till she solved the problem.

Lastly, impulse buying is no fun. Jaime needed some new shoes. We looked in some places and she didn’t find anything she liked so at the last store I told her she had to hurry up because we needed to get Alix somewhere. So she just picked up 2 pairs of shoes and bought them. Before we even got home she was feeling remorse for having bought them. She did like them but she only bought them because she thought they were cute not because she would actually ever wear them. Thank goodness for returns!
