CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

It’s off!!

on April 28, 2012

April 18 was the day we had been waiting for for 4.5 weeks. It was the day Keri was to go in and have her leg x-rayed and the cast off.

The cast had gotten pretty tore up over the 4.5 weeks it was on. She crawled across concrete, mud and anything else she happened to come into contact with. The last week she had it on she experimented with walking on it. She wanted that thing off so bad. A few times she went crazy because her leg itched so bad and she couldn’t scratch it. She was so eager to get it off, I got her to eat her breakfast for 3 days in a row because I told her they would not take the cast off if she didn’t.

Waiting to get the cast off.

She was so happy the day the cast came off. She actually giggled while Lauren sawed through the cast.

Lauren told her to cover her ears because it might be loud. Keri thought this was so funny!

First cut

Almost done with one side

Other side

"Cracking" open the cast

Cutting the inner soft layer

There is the leg we haven't seen for a month. It was so dirty and scaley looking and pale.

So happy to have it off

When the doctor came in and saw the cast he looked at it disgusted and said ‘You don’t want to keep this do you?’ That’s how bad it was. Of course I said yes. She needs to see her work with her own eyes when she is older!

I tried to get a picture to show the difference in the legs. The casted on looked smaller and was pale but this is not a very good picture of what it actually looked like.

The doctor was pleased with the progress. But then the x-ray showed the bone not fully healed. Because of the time though, the doctor did not want to put a new cast on. He said to have her take it easy and decide if she wanted to walk on it or not.

We love Lauren. She is SO nice!

It took a little over a day before she did some limp walk. By one week she was showing me how she could jump and run. Two things she is not allowed to do for the next 4 weeks. At least with the cast it was an easy reminder. This has been torture. No running, jumping, climbing or any other activity that could result in a fall. If she were to fall it would break easily again.

Anyway, it’s been interesting keeping a 3 year old from doing all those things. But she endures and knows it won’t be forever. She still limps and, unless reminded, she’ll do a kinda drag walk. She’ll drag her foot along while the other leg does all the work. We’ve been constantly having her practice walking straight and taking it slow. 2.5 weeks to go until we see the doctor again and get another x-ray to see if the bone has fully healed. Let’s hope so. She REALLY wants to go back on the tramp.
