CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Our Garden

on October 12, 2011

We have had the most amazing garden this year. We’ve been doing compost for 2 years now. This last year we decided to put our compost pile where our garden would be. So this spring we spread out all that beautiful soil. Added a bit of cow manure and rototilled it all in till the soil was nice and wonderful.

Then we planted. We tried not to get carried away like we have done in the past. We tried to make sure that each plant had plenty of growing space. We have a small plot of land for gardening, but we like so many things it’s hard not to cram too much into our little spot.

That day we planted:
corn
yellow squash
big tomatoes
cherry tomatoes
watermelon
peas
green beans
bell pepper
cantaloupe
pumpkin
zucchini squash
carrots

We started quite a few of these from seed. Even though our list was long, we normally don’t count on half of them working. We just try to grow them for fun. And we didn’t plant till the last week of May so we were even more discouraged that we wouldn’t get much this year.

Then we just started watering and watching and watering some more. We did lots of praying over the garden too. Cute Niah did not let a prayer go by unless our garden was prayed over. Here are the results of all that care and prayer:

[By the end the corn was 9-10ft tall. It was awesome!!]

[We had a couple of extra squash plants so we planted them in the front yard! They grew beautifully and, as far was we could tell, no one helped themselves.]

[Unfortunately, our watermelons only doubled from this size, but they sure were tasty!]

[We must have gotten 1000 Cherry Tomatoes!]

[See my pumpkin? Guess what I did with it…..]

[See my creation??? The family loved it! Can’t wait to make more for Thanksgiving and Christmas with the packed pumpkin I’ve made and stored for later use. That was the smallest pumpkin we got. All together we got 5 good sized ones.]

[We had LOTS of these!]

[So yummy!! We’ve never been successful with cantaloupe. But this year we successfully ate 3 of these little guys.]

[Final size. So tasty.]

[Our strawberry patch did really well this year too.]

I had so much fun making and creating things with all of our wonderful vegetables. We had squash so many different ways!! But our 3 favorite ways were: Chocolate chip zucchini cookies, zucchini bread and cut zucchini steamed to just the right texture. I made TONS of those three things and put them in the freezer. So in January, I can whip out a loaf of bread and warm it slightly and we’ll feel like we’re in heaven!

Anyway, all this harvesting and preserving has made me feel VERY blessed by my Heavenly Father. He will not leave us alone. He knows our needs, physical and spiritual, and he’ll provide relief for them all.
