CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Camping Fun

on September 5, 2008

Time goes by too fast!! It has now been almost a week since we got back from camping, but I haven’t said a word about our wonderful trip! I’ll start now!

We were suppose to leave Wednesday August 27 about 2pm. I had made dentist appointments for the 3 oldest with hopes that as soon as we got home we’d jump in the car and be on the road. The dentist appointments went well. No cavities and we’re good to go for the next 6 months, yay! I ran a quick errand and then we came home. I started getting things ready. I hadn’t realized how much I hadn’t got ready yet! We finally pulled out of here at 4pm!! We hit minimal traffic and made it to our campsite by 6:45. We started a fire right away, we needed coals to cook our hobo dinners we had made. After we had a roaring fire, we started unloading. Scott put up the tents with lots of “help”. After that the kids explored the area and we put the tents together. Since we couldn’t find one big tent for the whole family we opted for two big tents and divided up. Scott and the four oldest in one. All the stuff, me and the two youngest in the other. It seemed to work out, except for the fact that Scott and I were in separate tents. We’ll have to work on that!! After a wonderful dinner and marshmallows and talking we got to bed by 10:30pm. The kids were so excited to be at camp it took almost an hour for them to calm down and go to sleep. They were having such a good time.

Thursday August 28 came early but we enjoyed that. We made breakfast burritos in our cast iron skillet over the fire. They tasted so good. We used some potatoes from the hobo dinners the night before. After clean up it was apparent that it was HOT! We found out later that it was 110 degrees that day. Too hot for us Fremont dwellers. Everyone got their bathing suits on and we were down at the swimming hole by 10 am. We just swam and played and swam and played all day. We were having too much fun. Afton gave up first and was pretty miserable so we opted to leave and try and see the visitors center. We got everyone packed up and ready to go and go there by 4:30pm. But they closed at 4 so we went back to the camp site. It was so HOT that we couldn’t even sit on the stone bench! So we put towels down and started playing games of Uno while we got another fire going. Everyone took turns playing and enjoying each other’s company. Once Scott and I started cooking the chicken over the fire the kids dispersed and played and climbed trees and just enjoyed being in the open and free. As soon as dinner was done and dished up our friends showed up and enjoyed dinner with us. It was fun to see them and the kids were excited to have some friends to play with. After dinner all the kids helped clean up then did some more exploring and then went back to the swimming whole. Erika and Kris took their 3 kids and Jaime and Alix. Scott sneaked away to fish and I got the little ones bathed and in jammies. I put them in the tent and told them to just relax and when everyone got back we’d see if they could come out (since they were clean I didn’t want them to get dirty again). Milo, Niah and Keri didn’t make another sound. Afton fought it though and we brought her out and put her in the high chair. She just sat there gazing blank faced into the fire till she could no longer stand it and went to bed. We enjoyed talking and laughing and being together. We all finally gave up about 10:30pm.
