CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

The rest of July

on August 31, 2011

The rest of July really was low key. It consisted of LOTS of front yard work on behalf of my wonderful husband. Tons of school got done around here too, including Scott.

We did attend an A’s game on July 27. We always have so much fun with those. This is our 5th year of A’s games and for the first time their mascot, Stomper, came to our section. We just couldn’t resist getting some pictures.

Milo and his friend Joseph

Afton learned how to ride a two wheeler! She’d been asking for MONTHS to learn how to ride. Finally one day I told Niah she could teach her. Milo jumped into the mix. Finally I got involved. After about an hour of watching all of us try and fail, Scott got involved and she was off ridding in about 10 minutes. Dad’s are just good at doing stuff like that!! She is the happiest kid. Ever since then she has wanted to do nothing but ride a bike. She even transitioned from our ‘learn how to ride bike’ to one that is her size. She sure is growing up fast!

Learning to start on her own was a bit tricky, but she mastered that really fast too.

Off and riding!

Riding the big bike. She LOVES it!!

Jaime has really gotten into cooking. She especially likes baking and has now recently wanted to experiment with decorating.

Fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Decorating cupcakes to look like little pies. She had so much fun and even let me decorate a couple.

I’m part of a few lists for homeschooling purposes, but every once in a while someone will post something for sale or for free. Well, I was so elated when someone posted that they wanted to give away their wooden swing set. They were done using it and hoped it would go to a family that could use it. I jumped on that right away. Ever since our other swing set fell over from pure exhaustion, I’ve wanted another one. I’m so glad I held out. This thing is AWESOME!!

Milo was a huge help to Scott. Scott and I went to the person’s house and dissembled it. Then Scott and Milo reassembled it. Good times for Father and son.

For a few hours before Scott could start assembly, we had to cut and trim and cut some more those trees and bushes all around our yard from our neighbor’s yards. But it was so worth it. Doesn’t it look all neat nestled in the greenery of our back yard? It keeps it shady all day so the slide doesn’t get hot. The kids LOVE this thing. The swings are a bit squeaky. Ok, a lot squeaky. I think the whole neighborhood knows when my kids are on the play structure! Ahhh, the memories!

We also did lots of painting, bubbles and sidewalk chalk!

One of the mornings while I was getting things ready for my station at cub scout camp, there were these three falcons catching food. It appeared to be a mom and 2 babies. We were given the impression she was teaching them how to hunt. Anyway, very interesting to watch.

Scott and Milo helped the boy scouts get to the trail head of their 50 mile hike in Yosemite. They drove up on a Sunday night, camped overnight with them and then drove them to the trail head on Monday morning. Then Scott and Milo spent a few hours fishing and then came home. Apparently Milo caught a good sized fish. He got it shore but it got away at the last moment. Bummer!! O’well, they had TONS of fun!

A dear elderly woman from our ward passed away in July. She was dear to our hearts. My mom made blankets for all the kids starting with Milo (Jaime and Alix had blankets made for them by other people). At the beginning of this year Afton’s blanket got a big hole in it. Since there was no possible way for my mom to fix the blanket, I called on Velda Durney. A really nice lady who LOVES to knit and crochet. I asked her if we could bring the blanket over. We went over a couple of days later and she had made a new one for Afton to snuggle with while she fixed hers. After a few more days we went back over to get the fixed blanket. Afton and Velda were instant friends. At least once a week Afton would ask to go visit ‘the blanket lady’. Her passing was a sad one for me. She was a wonderful person and had left a real impression on my daughter. That’s big for me. Afton was devastated. Almost as much as when her own grandma died. I’ve no doubt that mom was there to thank Velda for being such a good example and light to her granddaughter.
