Milo Health Update

on March 20, 2011

We’ve had quite a few doctor appointments for Milo the last few weeks. I’ll start with the eye doctor.

On February 10 we went in for a routine eye appointment. While in the appointment the doctor found a scratch on Milo’s eye. It was very alarming to the doctor and prescribed an eye antibiotic to be put in his eyes 4 times a day.

On February 17 we went back for a recheck. He said the eye was looking better but not great. He said to get some eye moisturizer from the store and put it in his eye at night and patch the eye. We did that religiously for 2 weeks.

On March 3 we went back for a recheck. The doctor said he was not happy still and that we needed to keep doing what we were doing and when we see him next week if it wasn’t better he’d have to stitch Milo’s eye closed. WHAT??

On March 10 we had a panel review of all his doctors and then an eye appointment right after. The doctor was still not happy and said he’d have to schedule the eye closing. We were not ready to go for it and he said that he’d give us one more week. Then said something about putting in the eye moisturizer every 3 hours. We told him he never told us to do that. He said we needed to start and he’d give us on more week.

On March 17 we went back, after doing the every 3 hour thing VERY religiously, and he said it looked better but that he better still do the eye closing. I told him we would not do the eye closing. We didn’t see the benefit in it and we’d keep doing the eye moisturizer every 3 hours. He said fine and wanted us back in 2 weeks. So now we go in on April 4. We shall see what comes of it.

We have already thoroughly discussed this and have done some research and it doesn’t make sense to stitch the eye closed. The potential loss of eye sight does not make it worth it. If he’s going to go blind in that eye anyway, let him do it slowly. Closing it all at once takes him from all to nothing. Plus, he already gets made fun of enough. Closing his eye will make that part of his life even worse. So we continue every 3 hours and will continue for the rest of his life maybe.

But, for those of you who have seen Milo recently, he keeps his eyes open more often now. The more eye goo we put in, the wider his eyes are. It’s amazing to look at him and he looks at you back.

His panel review seemed to go well. All the doctors had positive things to say. Everyone said he is doing well and there was no need for any action items at this time. Perhaps a hearing test, but they think that will clear up when the fluid behind the ear drums clear up which will probably take place once spring is over.

But then his neurosurgeon choose to share some interesting information with us. Apparently Milo has a good sizes cyst on his brain by his neck. Because of the cyst his brain is being pushed outside the boundaries of the skull. I guess as long as it doesn’t bother him, they are not worried about it. But if he starts to complain of headaches that are associated with neck pain, we have to call him right away. Talk about a weight….

So I find myself constantly asking Milo if his neck hurts. He just looks at me like I’m an idiot and says, ‘No?’. Guess the doctor did not want to alarm Milo so Milo doesn’t know about this. He did show us a picture though and it looks really weird to see this mass and then my son’s brain being pushed into his neck. There’s a visual for you!!

Been a rough month for Milo…. :o) Hope yours has been better.
