CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Learned Something New

on July 11, 2010

Our piano was one of those hand me downs from who knows how long ago. It has worked good enough to get us this far in life. However, when we realized that 5 of the keys that the girls use most often didn’t work and the pedal that is used 90% of the time was broken too it was time to look into our piano problem.

[Here is what a piano repairman needs. Not much for what they actually do.]

We used a repairman that was recommended by our piano teacher. He came out and said it definitely had some problems but all in all it was a good piano. After another 20 minutes he dropped the bomb. After some discussion with him and with Scott we decided to get the piano fixed so that the girls (and Milo….) could practice more effectively.

Here is what I learned, you can gut a piano. I had no idea!! This guy just took the piano apart and stuffed the innards into his little car and drove off. He said he’d be back in 2 weeks to put it all back together and tune it. So now we have a gutted piano sitting in our living room. Am I the only clueless one on this?

[Taking out the “guts”]

[Gutted piano! He even took a bunch of the keys.]

Oh ya and by the way, Laura…..I hope you didn’t want the piano back. After what we’ve invested in this thing we hope our grandchildren will play on it!!

It doesn’t surprise me though I have never seen it. I was amazed at just the tuning!

Wow! I was in two posts in a row. I feel special. I definately never wanted the piano back. Glad you had it gutted. We had a guy come when we first got it to tune it and he also packed away the inards and brought them backin in 2 weeks. But he did minor repairs. I didn’t know you could do that then either. At the time he suggested more work, but we had already invested hours and money in repairing the outside. I learned that you should always have the insides checked out before you do outside repairs, duh. I guess my vain side was more worried about outward appearances. :) I cannot wait to hear how it soudns.
