CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Almost!

on March 27, 2010

Ok, so I ALMOST had the coolest experience in February. I am on quite a few homeschooling email groups and get invites to things all the time (field trips mostly). I got this email that they were looking for judges for a homeschooling debate. Apparently there is a debate club called CLASH and there are hundreds of debate teams from all over that get together and compete. I guess they like to have community judges. They figure if the kids can convince any stranger off the street of their position, then they deserve to win.

I signed up to judge a round. I realized after I got there that I would be the sole judge of these two teams for that round. These were only the preliminaries but they also worked to eliminate teams too. We had an hour orientation and a lunch and then, just as we were to go to the rooms and start the debates, the storm outside got so bad some power lines fell and we lost all power to the college campus we were using. For safety reasons they canceled the rest of the debate and sent everyone home. They did resume the debate the next day but neither Scott or I could assist. I was so bummed! It sounded like such a fun thing to do. I told them that if the competition was ever held local again to email me and I’d love to do some judging.
