CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Scrabble Anyone??

on November 1, 2009

We had a VERY fun Halloween. Our ward has these two fabulous families (I mean we have more than that but these two started a tradition) that LOVE Halloween and dress up as a family. They have been doing it for years and so more families have caught on and we are one of them.

After our pirate escapade last year, we talked for months about what we were going to be for this year. It was decided a good 6 months ago that we were going to be the letters of our last name. Then it evolved to playing scrabble with the letters of our last name. We had so much fun (and so did many others) coming up with AMAZING words using only the letters of our last name.

[This is my favorite one because these two girls say this the most and hear this the most!!]

[As you can tell, some of these pictures were taken at the ward Halloween party with our camera and some of them were taken at my neighbor Roberta’s house with Ian’s (another neighbor) camera.]

We had so much fun making up words. Roberta came up with smooth in the middle of the night. Most of the words we came up with came from our dear friends the Bennetts/Naylors. Those two families had so much fun coming up with words. The highest scoring word was an 11. Ian came by last night with his little boy and came up with photos. And just now as I am writing this I came up with months (also an 11 point word). Can you come up with anymore??? :o)

Can I tell you the BEST part of this costume (besides being cheap!!)? No frills or fuss!! I didn’t have to worry about lots of pieces, or the kids ripping the costume or ruining it by spilling something on it. AND it was comfortable to wear all day long! We’ve gotta come up with an equally “easy” theme for next year!!

The other thing I found absolutely amazing was that Keri stood right where we told her too. She thought it was the most fun thing. She got a little annoyed when she didn’t get to be in the picture. It was too cute. What a good girl she is.

I have to highlight some of the awesome costumes by families in our ward:

Hansen’s: Viking family
Bennett’s: Alice in Wonderland
Groch’s: The old Ball and Chain (they are a newlywed couple, it was hilarious)
Madson’s: Life gaurd saving a surfer from a shark (their little girl was dressed as the shark)

Those are the ones I remember. It was such a fun night at the ward Halloween party on Friday October 30. They had games, cotton candy, bounce house, face painting, cup cake decorating, dinner, trick or treating, and a cake contest. It was so great. The kids were in heaven and Keri ate so much candy that she was up screaming in the night for 2 straight hours. Perhaps the worst night of her life so far.

On October 31 we dressed up again and we let the kids hand out candy to trick or treaters that came to our door. I think we only had 7 knocks totaling in about 20 kids. We put all the little kids to bed on time and we let Jaime and Alix stay up a little later and play Scattergories with us. That was super fun. They had never played it before and had a really good time.

All in all a successful Halloween. But if you don’t mind me saying. I’ve decided I don’t like Halloween as much as I think I do. Ok wait, I like Halloween. I like the dressing up and having a ward party. I don’t like all the candy. I don’t like what it does to my kids. They have sugar running through their veins for days and it’s just not healthy or natural. I’m so glad that today is fast Sunday. We told the kids that part of fast Sunday for us was that NO ONE was having any candy or sweets. I can tell a difference already this afternoon in the amount of crying and temper tantrum throwing (it has decreased). I’m so glad we did not go out trick or treating last night. We would have even more candy I wouldn’t know what to do with!

I hear you on the candy thing. I am going to let the girls pick 30 candies and then offer to buy some from them. We already told them that we get a 50% tax since we are the ones that make it so they can go trick or treating (or to the ward party, etc).
