CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Life in a Nutshell

on September 13, 2009

I had made a commitment to start school on September 2. It was a silly commitment. I needed at least one day to recover from the beach trip. As I was putting Niah to bed that night she was a bit upset. When I inquired why she said ‘You promised me you’d teach me to read today’. Put a big L on my forehead!!

We officially started school on September 3. I came up with this new system. I usually like the kids to get all their school work done in the morning then they have the rest of the afternoon. However, with so many age groups to teach plus the little ones not getting any formal teaching I was feeling a little overwhelmed with how I was going to have them all learning at the same time in the morning. So I devised a plan and Jaime and Alix latched onto the idea with great enthusiasm. From 8:30 – 10:30 every morning Jaime and Alix take care of Afton and Keri. They can do anything with them as long as they all shower and get dressed for the day. After that it’s open. They can go for a walk, play in the backyard, do play dough, paint, color…… anything. They LOVE it. Both the big girls and the little girls. The best part is that I am getting TONS done. I have determined though that Milo needs more than that time. He needs that time plus a separate reading time in the afternoon when the little kids are napping and Jaime and Alix are doing school. We are having a rough time squeezing it all in in the morning and he can’t sit for longer than that. Ok, I can’t sit longer than that!! :0)

Jaime and Alix spend a couple of hours each afternoon getting school work done. I am slowing adding things to their plate because I really want Milo and Niah to get their foundation. Jaime and Alix have an excellent foundation for school and a love of learning. So I want Milo and Niah to have that.

Also on September 3, Scott took a test to help him advance in his job. He passed with flying colors. In his own words:

So, today I passed LPIC exam 102. This means I am now LPIC Level 1 certified. I’m pretty excited to have achieved this goal. It’s taken about two months to get there.

LPIC stands for Linux Professional Institute Certification. I am a certified Linux expert, which should win me fame and fortune and glory. Actually, since we use Linux extensively at Google, it just assures me that I’m as good at my job as I thought I was.

We are all so pleased with Scott’s desire to continue his education. We are even more blessed that the Lord has put opportunities like this in front of him so he can achieve educational goals without interfering with home or work. We love you babe and are so happy for you and your accomplishment!!
