Mother’s day was quite relaxing and fun. I got to go to church while Scott stayed home with sick kids. That was very relaxing and I enjoyed that. After church, all the kids went upstairs with Scott and I got to nap downstairs for 3 hours. It was pure bliss. Scott cooked dinner and we just enjoyed being home as a family. We took time to call our moms and wish them a happy mother’s day too. After the kids went to bed, I went to bed too. Somehow the 3 hours in the afternoon were just not enough! At church we got big yummy cookies made by Jen Hansen (Thanks Jen, they were GREAT), Milky way candy bars from primary (Thanks Mom Thompson for the idea) and flowers. It was all really good and perfect for this mom. Jaime made me a nice card and two magnets, they were very nice. The rest of the kids spent the day NOT fighting and that was the best present ever!!
Jaime and Alix did STAR testing earlier in the month. They tested at Club Sport. Weird, I know, but they thought it was cool. Alix’s primary teacher works at Club Sport and so after her last test on the last day, Sister Lietner picked up Alix and gave her the grand tour (Jaime finished so fast she went one day less to testing than Alix did and missed out on the tour). Alix even got a back massage. She thought that was pretty cool. Thanks Priscilla for being so cool!
On May 7 I got a very unexpected phone call. It went something like this
‘Hi, this is the pre-op nurse from Oakland Children’s Hospital. I’m calling to give you instructions about Milo’s surgery next Wednesday.’
‘REALLY?? Milo is scheduled for surgery in less than a week? This is the first I’ve heard of this.’
After we get the misunderstanding worked out it all made more sense. Milo’s last ENT appointment ended with ‘We’ll get the ball rolling for ear tubes and I’ll contact you.’ Apparently, they were contacting me! So I spent the day making pre-op appointments. We had two appointments on Tuesday May 12. One in Pleasanton and one in Oakland. It made for quite the day. I was gone for about 5 hours. That was the day I got my parking ticket (lucky me!!). On May 13, Scott stayed home and took care of the kiddo’s while I took Milo for his ear tubes. We arrived on time and were reading a book when I got a call on my cell from the patient advocate person (that is what I call her, I don’t know what her official title is. Basically she is the liaison between us and the doctors so we don’t have to do all the calling. She’s nice to have). She said that since Milo and I were there a few of his doctors wanted to see him. She’d let me know when. About 2 minutes before Milo is suppose to walk into the operating room, 3 doctors show up. They look at him, touch his head, talk to him, talk to each other, make some decisions and then tell me they’ll be in touch (that is why I like Carole). After surgery (about 10 minutes) Dr. Sun’s personal nurse comes in to see Milo and takes some measurements and such. She passes me a note that says I have an appointment with Dr. Salim (the eye doctor) at 5pm. BUMMER! It’s only 2:30pm! So we go for a little walk, get something to eat, drink and a cookie. We rest. We look through Wal Greens. Then we head over, about 30 minutes early. The doors are locked. WHAT?? Apparently, I was given the message wrong. The doctor said he could squeeze us in sometime by 5pm. Now what? I ring the door bell. The nurse comes out with a smile. Guess they had given up on us ever showing up. I told her what they told me and we all laughed about the misunderstanding. Milo had his usual eye exam. Dr. Salim said that the pressure in his eyes are worse and that the need for his mid face surgery is VERY important. After that surgery then Dr. Salim can go in and do a surgery to try and correct the eyes, but his surgery won’t be nearly as successful until the other surgery is done. Really, none of that was any different than what he has said for the last 2 years. Except this is the first appointment where the eye pressure is getting worse. So basically Dr. Salim says Milo needs the mid face surgery then he can correct the eyes. Dr. Toth says that Dr. Salim needs to fix the eyes, and they will wait on the mid face surgery. I dunno. I sure wish these doctors would communicate better! So now Milo has a CT scan scheduled for June 8. We’ll see what comes of that. Hopefully it will result in a surgery to correct his mid face, then a surgery to correct his eyes, and then Milo can go on living and not have to worry any more about when his next surgery is. At least for a while! We love that boy so much. He has taught us and everyone else so much about being bold and brave and awesome! The anesthesiologist came out after the surgery and said he had never seen a child at this age so easy going and so calm. Milo just walked right into the operating room without any prior medication and got on the table and breathed the air and never once had a panic attack or nerves or anything. He was very impressed with Milo’s maturity and strength. I am too. Good job Milo Man!
Glad to hear the tubes went in okay. I can picture Mr. Milo walking right in to the procedure like it’s another day at the office. So cute.
Thanks for the update. We are always wondering about when his surgeries are and how he is doing with everything. Sounds like he is a trooper as always!
